What do "the people" want?

Do you think that the economic crisis has opened people's eyes to the bad side of capitalism? Do you think that people who, when times were good, looked down on the poor are now interested in forming a society without poverty? Or do you think that many of the middle-class people involved in movements like Occupy just want to return to their pre-crisis economic state?

This involves lots of generalizing but it's been on my mind. Feel free to re-frame the question.

  1. Well, first of all, what do we mean by 'the people'?

On some level I think the Occupy movement is largely divided between leftists and liberals who do not want the same things or have the same goals.

Middle-class liberals, for example, are not interested in making any radical changes. Their anger is predominately directed towards this '1%' and corporate greed/corruption.

In general I don't think the mentality of most people has changed. So I guess I'll reframe the question that way.

Without digressing into the economic system of capitalism, let's talk about it's ideology. Whether people have a high opinion or stock-brokers or not, they still buy into social Darwinism and individualism, right?
